Under The Pole
The end of the year is approaching, which means it’s the perfect time to take a look back. The year 2018 has been a particularly intense year, filled with challenges, discoveries, and emotions. Let’s start with the journey from one hemisphere to another. The WHY needed to be prepared for the North-South crossing of the Pacific. This work took place in Sitka, Alaska, over the course of a month. It allowed us to reach Hawaii, our stopover, with no major damage, despite 12 days of hide-and-go-seek with the low-pressure systems. After 10 months in the polar regions, the crew were finally able to work on deck in shorts and T-shirts!
The arrival in Polynesia marked a new stage in the Under The Pole program: the study of the mesophotic coral reefs. Reaching depths of up to 150 m required rigorous training. For three weeks, the team practiced the methods of deep-sea diving. Between Tahiti, Moorea, Huahine, Raiatea… Everyone found their feet under the sweltering heat of the tropics. In August, the scientific research could finally begin. Dives, reports, palm trees and mosquitos followed. The immersions were long, taking nearly three hours, and the tasks were many: taking samples, photos, and installing sensors... In five months, across five archipelagos of French Polynesia, 200 dives were carried out between 60 and 120 m deep, 4000 samples of coral were taken, and 1 new species was identified.
That’s before we mention the memories, and there were dozens of them: a volcanic eruption off the coast of Big Island, the mythical lagoon of Bora-Bora, Tikehau’s cave of grey sharks, the spectacular fauna of the Tiputa pass... The most stunning remains without a doubt a dive in the coral fields of the slopes of Makatea, in crystal-clear water, at 90 m deep, and an afternoon spent as a family on an isolated beach, feet on the sand, surrounded by palm trees. Unforgettable moments we could only dream of...
To mark the end of the year, the whole Under The Pole team wishes you unforgettable moments with your family and that you make every minute count. We hope that this coming year is full of discoveries, joy and a renewed momentum. Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!
